Genesis 3:5 says “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” However, there’s probably a better way to interpret the Hebrew here—but it requires quite a bit of explanation.

Godzilla, Mothra, and Gamera are all well-known kaiju in Japanese stories and movies. These strange creatures, often of enormous size, tend to bring chaos along with them wherever they go. Intruigingly enough, kaiju-like beings can be found throughout the Bible in creatures such as Leviathan, Rahab, and Behemoth. But what exactly are these beings? Are they mythical? Are they symbolic? Are they supernatural beings? Were they living creatures that existed long ago? Or do they still exist today, hidden from us? Can all of these questions even be concretely answered?

Chaos

Jesus sleeping through a storm while on a boat means a lot more once you understand the significance of the sea in an ancient's mind.

The Serpent

What was the serpent in the Garden of Eden? A talking snake? Satan manifested as a snake? A snake taken over by Satan? Something else?

Sexual Temptation

Not only did Jesus beat temptation in the desert, but he beat it in every single way. That is not to say that temptation was easy for Jesus—just that he succeeded in beating the urge to sin. This should speak volumes to us, because often we think that God couldn't understand our temptations and addictions, when he had to face the same possibilities of sinning as we did.

In today's message, we continue to work with this logic to talk about a sin that all humans are known to struggle with: sex. We especially hone in on a conversation the church often does talk about within this topic, which is pornography. What we learn will help us work together to help each other.

Be Fruitful and Multiply

God’s command to “Be Fruitful and Multiply” is often used by pastors to talk about the goodness of marital sex (which is all well and good), but this ignores the mission at play in the command. As it ends up, there's a real reason for this command based on the fact that we are imagers of God, and so this command is still at play today in a way.

We also answer a question from Sunday’s message on refugees: “Is the fear that some have of foreigners, derived from societal constructs and national extremism? Or is it a lie straight from the devil?”

The Suffering at Christmas

We often get so caught up in the joy of Christmas that it's easy to miss all the suffering. But when we do pay attention we find that the almighty God of the universe isn't just with us in Jesus, but He suffers with us as well.
